Need To Purchase A New Snowplow? 3 Factors To Consider

Posted on

If your old snowplow is just not doing the job anymore, or if you want to take care of plowing the snow on your property yourself, there are certain factors you need to take into consideration when you are purchasing a new snowplow.

#1: Type of Plow Job

First, you need to think about what type of plow job you will be taking on with your snowplow. For example, will you remove snow from big parking lots or a really long rural driveway? In that case, you are going to want to go with a larger snowplow. You may also want to go with a V-shaped snowplow, which can more effectively move the large quantities of snow you will be dealing with.

If you are just going to be clearing your own driveway and not taking on super long driveways or doing any commercial work with the plow, a shorter plow will work. You can go with a V-blade if you want; however, for smaller spaces, a straight blade, which tends to be less expensive, will work just as well.

#2: Vehicle

The second factor you need to consider is the vehicle you will be attaching the snowplow to, which corresponds to the type of jobs you are taking on.

If you are going to be moving a lot of snow for hours at a time and doing commercial plowing, you are going to want to work with a 3/4 ton pickup truck. You need a vehicle that has a high front gross axle weight rating to handle the weight of the plow and the snow. With a larger pickup truck, you can also add a salt or sand spreader to further what you offer your customers.

If you are just plowing your driveway or plowing your own small parking lot for your business, you can get away with a 1/2 ton pickup truck. You can also use a UTV as well with a snowplow.

#3: Budget

Finally, your budget for a snowplow is going to impact what you can purchase. A commercial snowplow is going to cost you thousands of dollars. A V-shape plow is going to cost more than its straight-blade counterpart of the same size.

If you are on a budget, you can go used. Many good snowplow dealers sell quality used snowplows. When looking at used snowplows, be sure to inspect all the parts carefully and ensure the blade isn't bent or has broken welds.

Look into different brands of snowplows like Ultramount snowplows to see which would work for your situation.
